Pursuing a Doctoral Degree at the University of Queensland - Alexandra Wee

Miss Alexandra Wee who graduated from Temasek Info Tech in 2001 with a Diploma in Information Technology (ITO) credits the school for providing her with an Overseas Internship Programme at the University of Queensland. It was this experience that set her thinking about pursuing a degree course. Not only did she complete her Bachelor’s degree programme, Alexandra went on to pursue doctoral studies in IT.

“No, I was not a merit scholar. I had the occasional distinction but on hindsight I probably could have worked a little harder,” said a modest Alexandra in an email interview.

Recounting her experience at Temasek Poly, Alexandra recalled fondly the Jam and Hop events, lunches with friends at Mensa 2 canteen, her Overseas Internship Programme and Toastmasters Club gatherings.

Alexandra is currently engaged in research in the area of IT. She finds it a worthwhile profession which has its own rewards and encourages students to consider moving into this field.

Alexandra’s interest is in Interfaces both in design and functionality. For her Honours project she worked on Auditory Interfaces in Medical Equipment.

At present Alexandra is doing alot of reading and hopes one day that her contributions may improve the working environment in operating theatres for medical staff and this may ultimately help save a life.

Alexandra encourages students to pursue a university degree because it helps to develop a more theoretical approach to IT. It gives one the opportunity to learn more design skills and develop a more complete understanding of the computing tools as well as the design and rationale for them.

Her advise to students on the way to keep ahead is to have something extra to give to employers - whether it is being a good leader (as demonstrated by a good CCA record) or taking in university subjects which would help you in a certain niche-area (for example, Interaction design, Software Engineering, Data Communications and Networking).

We wish Alexandra all the best in her academic pursuits.
