Temasek Information Technology School caught up recently with Edward Fun, General Manager of Apple Computers in a telephone interview. Edward had graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a Diploma in Information Technology in 1995.
What are your more significant memories of Temasek Polytechnic?
I studied at the former Stirling Road campus where IT students mingled closely with the School of Design students.
One day I was mistaken for a design student ! “Are you sure you are in the right class?” someone asked. Perhaps it's because I did not quite fit in with the stereotype of a computer geek. Today, some of my best friends are producers, designers, art directors and I am working closely with the government in a small way to encourage good product and industrial design. I hope in a small way to help put Singapore at the forefront in this area.
How would you describe yourself?
I looked a little like a rebel then in my school days at Temasek Poly. I have a tattoo, it's not a fashion statement or anything…it's just a picture of a flying creature. I guess that creature symbolizes me. I am quite adventurous - Sagittarians are supposed to be. I am quite sporty - having played rugby for the school. I like soccer too - I am usually the right defender.
What guiding principles do you adhere to in your life?
Treat others as you want to be treated. An uncle of mine taught me that. I try to put myself as the person at the receiving end of the product or service. At the end of the day one may also end up as the customer, so one better improve one's product or service. I try to make things better and more convenient for the receiver.
I dispose of food and put back the trays to where they should be whenever I am at a fast food restaurant. Perhaps it's because I had been a waiter once. I believe in the importance of being respectful and considerate to others.
What's the secret of your success and what principles do you hold as GM?
Persistence - I believe that whether one is in sales or in any other line, one must be determined to succeed. By focusing on the needs of your users, you deliver a great product or service.
I believe it is important to know my staff well and to bring out the best in each person. Each staff has to be treated with respect and firmness, to get the best from each.
Respect is important. We need to give others their due as one may also be at the receiving end of things. Paying close attention to other's needs - I try to do that.
