INS Diploma Holder Now Pursuing a PhD

While many of her peers are striking out in the corporate world, Lee Shu Shing, a graduate from the inaugural batch of Diploma in Information Studies, prefers an academic pursuit. Armed with a Diploma in Information Studies in 1999, she proceeded to Queensland University of Technology where she graduated with a Bachelor in IT in 2000. She then returned to Singapore to pursue a Master of Science degree in Information Studies at the Nanyang Technological University, completing her course in 2002. Presently Shu Shing is pursuing a PhD in the hope of becoming a professor in a university.

Shu Shing's research topic looks at information seeking behaviour from a creative perspective. According to her, establishing this perspective is important as it may lead to new and perhaps improved ways of developing systems and interfaces to support information seeking.

"I decided to pursue the topic of 'creative information seeking' as it is something new in the field of information science. I hope to be able to provide scholars in this field with insights into creativity and how seeing information seeking from a creativity perspective may possibly help to better support information seekers' needs."

Shu Shing attributes her independence, self-confidence and social skills to the education she had in Temasek Info Tech. She said, "Temasek Info Tech School  made me realised that learning can be fun, challenging, and fulfilling. When learning is fun and rewarding, it becomes easier and spontaneous. That is so important because learning is integral to life. Life long learning ensures that you constantly improve yourself and enables you to contribute more to society". She mentioned her diploma at Temasek Info Tech School provided her a solid foundation for her university education in Australia. More importantly, her final year project taught her to work and learn independently as well as in a team.

She said, "The self-directed learning and team building skills ensured that I could always learn and work effectively regardless whether it is in a team or as an individual." Shu Shing expects to complete her PhD in 2006.

Her words of encouragement to her juniors at Temasek Info Tech School:

"Treat failures and obstacles in life as valuable lessons. Do not let them beat you down. Instead, believe in yourself and persevere to get through them for the fruits that lie ahead as well worth it."
