Wong Wei Ming, a final year student from the Diploma in Information Technology, was 2nd runner-up in the 2004 Asia Pacific Microsoft Office Academic Skills Challenge in the MS Excel category. The competition was held in Shanghai, China, from 23-26 July 2004. The championship was won by Lau Cher Han of Singapore Polytechnic and the runner-up was Park Chan-Heon of Korea.
Wei Ming had earned the opportunity to participate in the regional championship after coming in as runner-up at the Singapore 2004 Microsoft ® Office Academic Skills Challenge (MS Excel category) held on 14 July 2004. InfoTech student Teo Wai Ming Stevecame in Third in the MicrosoftExcel 2002 category, while James Fu came in Third in the Microsoft Word 2002 category.
The regional competition featured 19 participants from six countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, China and Korea, who had progressed to the regional championship event after winning at the National Finals held in their respective countries.
Having experienced the challenge of competing against the best in the Asia Pacific region, Wei Ming was grateful for the opportunity and had this to say: “It was certainly an enriching experience. The cultural exchange amongst the international participants was as engaging as the pitting of technical skills. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have gained through the preparation for this competition. I have developed invaluable insights on how to cope in a stressful, competitive environment. These are life-long skills that I know will always stand me in good stead.”
