Over 100 teams from all over the world participated in the 2008 Oracle Academy Global Data Modelling Competition. Temasek Polytechnic was represented for the first time by a three member team comprising students from the Diplomas in Internet and Multimedia Development (IND) and Financial Business Informatics (FBI). The students were Teh Xue Fen Shellen (IND), Koh Jun Kiat (FBI) and Chng Cheng Ye Benny (FBI).
In the competition, participating teams were required to create a database model based on a given topic, for a fictional company or organisation of the team’s choosing. The theme for the competition was meteorological weather systems. For the purposes of the competition, Aeolus Corporation, a fictional meteorological systems provider, was used.
Working closely with database lecturers, Ms How Woan Ling and Ms Cheng Huey Chen, the team worked on their application from the end of November 2007 to early January 2008. With input from the Meteorological Services Division (Singapore), the team was able to put together a comprehensive model that took into consideration different weather patterns, including patterns not experienced in tropical countries.
The team emerged 6th, out of an honour list of 11 teams, and earned a commendation from Oracle (Singapore), for doing well as Singapore, and Asia’s sole representative.
