A team of students from the Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security emerged champions in the Tertiary Category of the Splash Awards Competition 2010. They had created an application called What’s Out There - a social networking platform that combines mobile and desktop computing to deliver location-based social networking services. Through seamless integration of physical world information and social networking, the user has a better overview of “who” and “what” in the surrounding. Most importantly, the user would be able to act/interact based on personal needs and desired activities for both @School and @Play. Using the application by the IIT student team, users can:
- check for activities/events/sales (commercial and non-commercial) that are within a given radius, i.e. 5 KM, so that they can react accordingly;
- be updated on special activities/sales around the campus with the exact location and detailed information;
- find out which canteen on campus is less crowded.
These are only a few of the many features in the application. The winning team comprised of senior students from the Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security - Chang Hua Peng, Low Jianhao Jonathan and Dai Zhong Min.The 1st runner-up was NTU and the 2nd runner-up was a team from NYP.
