Temasek Polytechnic’s Information Technology School has proved itself to be a power house for Java Programmers. For the third year running, it has won top prizes at the local Java Programming competition for Institutes of Higher Learning.
JavaJive, the Technopreneur Challenge 2006, is an event supported by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and organized by Sun Microsystems. The competition was open to all infocomm students from local polytechnics and the ITE colleges. The objective was to harness creativity and build a passion for technology through the innovative use of Sun’s technologies, namely, NetBeans, Java Studio Enterprise (JSE) and Solaris features.
Temasek Info Tech School fielded 3 teams in the JavaJive Challenge to compete with the best from the other IHLs. Two of the teams won three of the top prizes.
D-Coderz, a team comprising of three enthusiastic final year students from the Diploma in Information Technology, impressed judges with their Electronic Dictionary. They devised a programme that helps you find the meaning of a word and hear how it is pronounced using your handphone. What’s more, you can see an animated picture of some of the words and play word games with this programme. The idea was a winner! The judges thought it was highly novel and the programme was easy to use. The team won TWO awards at the competition - the Creative Award which is given to the most creative business application and the Usability Award which recognizes that an application is easy to use.
Another team from Temasek InfoTech School, TPITS4, also made up of three students from the Diploma in Information Technology, won the Process Award for their Science Practical Assessment System. This award is given to teams with the best logic for a business application and the best implementation of real world business practices.
Mr. Lim Kok Hwee, Course Manager of the Diploma in Information Technology, had this to say: ‘I am very proud of the achievements of these students. They worked hard for the award. This victory also reflects the strengths of the diploma in equipping students with a solid IT foundation as well as helping them to master knowledge and skills that are highly relevant in the IT industry.’
