2008 - Brandon Lee Yi Kang – TPSU President

In the recent Temasek Polytechnic Student Union (TPSU) elections, Brandon Lee, from the Diploma in Cyber and Digital Security in Temasek Informatics & IT School was elected as the new TPSU President!

So, what led Brandon, who is currently in his second year at TP, to run for the Presidency of TPSU? The affable young man shared that his first taste of TP life was at the TPSU Freshman Orientation Workshop-Camp last year. “It was eye-opening to see how one person can influence a team”, and it was that sense of how he could make a positive impact on others that led Brandon to join the TPSU as well as the IIT Studies Club (IITSC) sub-committees. “These two organizations also allow me to participate in various activities which are fun, enriching and motivating”. He particularly enjoyed organizing the Freshmen Orientation camp and activities this year, and it was during that time that many students, including seniors and committee members suggested that he should run for TPSU. Being able to play a part in the lives of the TP students thus led him to run for the elections.

Taking up the Presidency was not a natural decision, though, as Brandon shares that his resistance to major changes initially held him back. Thankfully, after talking to his family, friends and lecturers, Brandon decided to take up the challenge and take on his new responsibilities as TPSU President. Receiving the highest number of votes from his peers was also strong encouragement for him. He added, “I am very thankful to those who have supported me. I have an important task to do for this upcoming year, to prove to everyone that I am worthy of their votes and support.”

What are his goals as the new TPSU President? Now that he is the President of TPSU, Brandon is more involved in organizing and coordinating events. He feels that this allows him to learn and apply “many different life skills and interpersonal communication skills”. He plans to organize activities that would help every student that comes into TP to feel that sense of belonging, fun and excitement that he experiences. “The smiles I receive and the joy I feel in my heart, make me come to school every day without fail.”

Brandon is quick to add that he also hopes to sustain the excellent standards set by the previous committee. He would like to take TP to greater heights, through more project collaborations with other constituent clubs which would allow for more student participation. He continues, “I hope to have events that can publicize and showcase the TP image well.”

So, what does he think of TP and IIT? Brandon remarks, “TP has always been a happening Polytechnic and I will always tell others to come TP to study. I love my course, Cyber and Digital Security (CDS). The lecturers are fantastic, and let’s not forget my lovely classmates for the great fun and laughter”. Brandon was formerly from Punggol Secondary School and his decision to join the Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security (CDS) in TP was made when he came for Joint-Admission Exercise (JAE) Counselling. “I felt at home when I talked to the CDS Course Manager, Ms Mandy Mak, and the Section Head, Mr Benny Chin. They were really sincere in introducing me to the course and the benefits of the course…at that moment, in my mind I told myself, TP is the place to be.”

Now, in his new capacity as TPSU President, Brandon is set on making TP the place to be for both current and future TP students. We congratulate Brandon on his appointment and look forward to the many exciting plans and activities he has in store for the students of Temasek Polytechnic!
