The project was developed by Steven Liew Weijian, Tan Boon Kheng and Poh Yang Zhou, from the Diploma in Mobile and Wireless Computing.
The group was inspired to develop the Where R U (WRU) application as a result of the various cases of missing persons they came across in news reports. They wanted to develop something that would help caregivers track the whereabouts of their charges, such as young children, or those suffering from mental or communicative disabilities, and even elderly folks suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia who are prone to losing their way.
WRU is an innovative system that allows one to track the location of a person using readily available technologies such as the Short Message Service (SMS) technology, Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and Online Maps. In addition, it only requires two pieces of equipment, namely, a mobile phone carried by the caregiver, and a mobile phone with embedded GPS carried by the charge. Hence, unlike other tracking systems that require specialised and expensive hardware and software, WRU is more affordable and easier to deploy.
