2005 - Alice and Java Programming: A Temasek and IDA Infocomm Clubs Programme

Temasek Polytechnic (TP) is partnering the IDA Infocomm Clubs to provide a 30 sessions per year (altogether 180 hrs in 3 years) course on Alice and Java Programming for secondary school students, including 5 sessions of optional modules*.

This is part of the effort to support the Infocomm Clubs objectives :

  • To excite students about the possibilities of infocomm and
  • To equip students with relevant infocomm skills so as to enable them to creatively communicate ideas in their school work.

This is a 3-year curriculum to be conducted at 2 hours per session per week.

Overview of the Course

The course starts with Alice programming. The Alice system provides an innovative approach to teaching and learning computer programming principles in an exciting environment. The goal of the system is to allow traditional programming concepts to be more easily taught and understood. In addition, students will also learn and practice problem solving skills through the use of Alice. As a visual development tool, Alice can be used in many ways besides learning to write software programme. Students can use the tool to build contents such as simulating a physical phenomena (eg. the Solar System) and creating an interactive game like a flight controlled plane.

The second part of the course is on Java Programming. Java is a useful general purpose programming language well-suited for program that works in conjunction with the internet. Java is widely taught in many higher learning institutions. Students who learn the skills in Java programming will have a jump start when they move on to institutes of higher learning.

In summary, this course aims to introduce students to the fun and challenging world of software programming.
